Have you ever had hot chocolate made from scratch?
We love hot chocolate on days when everything has to be more cozy or hyggeligt as we say in danish. We like to serve hot chocolate year round and especially on rainy or cold days.
If you ask a Dane, hot chocolate mostly be served together with a batch of fresh baked sweet rolls. This combination will always be served for birthdays, and the hot chocolate will then be topped with a spoonful of whipped cream on the top. I remember that to be the best part when I was I kid. I loved to wait until the cold whipped cream melted before I would drink the chocolate.
Sometimes, when we serve this hot chocolate on a hot summer day, we will first fill the glass with frozen vanilla ice cream and then top up with hot chocolate. Uhm, I want a glass of that now!
Making your own hot chocolate from scratch is simply too easy not to do. It is also much more cheaper than the ones you can buy.
Try and make this chocolate next time you find a good excuse to celebrate something with your kids. Top it with whipped cream or marshmallows and the joy will no end take.
Hot chocolate – made from scratch
When you make hot chocolate you start by adding the milk in a medium sized pot.
You can use any kind of milk. My parents would say that you need to use whole milk, but I always use non fat milk, just to feel a bit bore healthy.
It is important that you heat up the milk slowly, so it doesn’t burn.
Burnt milk does not taste good.
Be very careful that the milk doesn’t get to a boil. The milk will taste too much of rice porridge/pudding when it gets to those high temperatures.
When you are adding the milk you also add the chocolate powder, vanilla sugar and a dash of cinnamon.
Ideal you should heat it up slowly and keep stirring until it’s almost boiling.
You can see the steam raising from the chocolate milk, and then you will know that it’s perfect.
Finally you pour the hot chocolate into cups. If you feel for it you can top it with whipped cream or add vanilla ice cream if its a hot sommerday.
Enjoy!
