Ok, these bread monsters a.k.a. hotdogs you simply have to try!
They take no time to make and they can easily be made ahead and stored in the freezer until the right occasion!
They are so good for everything!
Try bringing them for potlucks, sharing, lunch boxes, picnics, playdates or serve them at birthday parties. We did that last time my youngest had a party and oh boy, the kids were thrilled of joy!
No matter where you bring them, you are guaranteed they always brings a big smile!
These hotdogs or Pigs in a Blanket are a favorite in our house. I sometimes fill the hot dogs with cheese filled sausages and sometimes I don’t wrap them as monsters.
It all depends on how much time I have. However, monsters or not, these hotdogs or pigs in a blanket are a recipe to keep.
They are fast to make, fairly easy to make, taste awesome, are fun and handy to eat.
I made my own dough from scratch in my stand mixer, but you could make them even faster and easier by picking up a bag of ready to use pizza dough if you prefer that. (Trader Joe’s has a good one).

To begin with you have to activate the dry yeast. To do that you take a large bowl and mix the dry yeast, the lukewarm water and 1 tablespoon of honey.
When it starts to bubble a bit, the yeast is ready to use and you can add the rest of the ingredients.
Then you add melted butter, flour, yogurt, egg and salt and knead the dough well! I use a stand mixer.
Now you have to let the dough rise, covered, for about half an hour.
After the dough has rested for half an hour, you divide the dough into 16 equal chunks. (the 16. chunk is for body parts!)
Making the monsters:
Cut the wieners in the middle so you have two half wieners.
Roll each lump between your hands so it forms a long thin shape, until about 15 inches long.
You will now have 15 long pieces of dough.
Now you take on of the half wieners and one of the long pieces of dough.
Start by rolling the dough carefully around the wiener, starting from one end until you reach the other end. (this is the body)
Use a tiny bit from the 16. chunk of dough to roll out two tiny balls. Place them on top, towards the end where your wiener peaks out. Place the eyes close together or they will roll down when baked. (this is the eyes)
Then you take another tiny lump from the 16. body-part-chunk and roll it out thinly. Round, rectangular or triangle, it doesn’t matter. Size needs to be about a like a quarter. Cut 1/4″ into that piece to form a claw. Make two pieces and and place them just under the head of the body part. (this is the arms)
Finally you place them on a baking tray with baking paper and let rise for 15 min. – while oven is heating up.
Brush the monsters with a beaten egg and bake for 10-12 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until lightly golden. Adding an egg wash to the dough and a maybe a sprinkle of sesame seeds makes these breads extra delicious!
Cool on a rack and enjoy.
You can easily freeze the hotdogs or pigs in a blanket after they are baked.

Hi,
Love the idea! I have a daughter who is allergic to peanuts, soy, eggs and seeds so I have to make her homemade hot dog buns, this would be so much quicker. Can I use melted butter instead of the egg or will they burn too easily?
Lynn
She will love these monsters ;o) and yes, I believe you can use melted butter – or else I would recommend brushing with milk. Good luck!
I will try that out, but I guess you can – but try using milk instead of egg. I know you can do that for sure! Good luck!
Great Idea, wish you had pics of each of the steps. Helps to see what each step looks like. 🙁
You are right about that fact. Next time I make them, I’ll document how I build them. Until then,I hope my description worked for you.
Hi I am in the UK making these. What type of yoghurt do I use? Greek or natural? Also us it plain four or self raising or strong bread flour please?
Can’t wait to make these for our picnic.
I am happy that you stumbled over my bread monsters. I simply just use the regular King Authors plain flour and make mostly my own yoghurt. You can use any yoghurt you like. I have even used vanilla greek yoghurt too with great result. Have fun and enjoy!
