Ok, these bread monsters a.k.a. hotdogs are so good for everything!
Try bringing them for potlucks, sharing, lunch boxes, picnics, playdates, birthdays and you name it!
They take no time to make and they can easily be made and stored in the freezer until the right occasion!
Bread monsters a.k.a. hotdogs
Ingredients: (makes 15)
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 tablespoon dry yeast
1 tablespoon honey or sugar
1 stick of butter (4 oz / 113 g)
3,5 cup flour
1/2 cup yogurt
1 egg (+1 for brushing)
1/2 tsk salt
8 Wieners (cut in half)
Activate the dry yeast in the warm water by adding 1 tablespoon of honey (or sugar). When it starts to bubble, the yeast is ready for the rest of the ingredients.
Add melted butter, flour, yogurt, egg and salt and knead the dough well!
Let the dough rise, covered, for about half an hour and then divide the dough into 16 equal chunks. (the 16. chunk is for bodyparts)
Roll each lump between your hands until about 15 inches long.
Start by rolling the dough around the wiener, starting from one end til you reach the other end. (body)
Use a tiny lump from the 16. chunk of dough to roll out two tiny balls and place on top, close together – or they will roll down when baked. (eyes)
Use a lump again and roll it out thinly. Cut the endings to form claws. Place just under the head of the body part. (arms)
Place on a baking tray with baking paper and let rise for 15 min – while oven is heating up.
Brush the loaves with a beaten egg and bake for 10-12 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until lightly golden.
Cool on a rack.
You can freeze them after they are baked – and save them until “just in case” ;o)
Hi,
Love the idea! I have a daughter who is allergic to peanuts, soy, eggs and seeds so I have to make her homemade hot dog buns, this would be so much quicker. Can I use melted butter instead of the egg or will they burn too easily?
Lynn
She will love these monsters ;o) and yes, I believe you can use melted butter – or else I would recommend brushing with milk. Good luck!
I will try that out, but I guess you can – but try using milk instead of egg. I know you can do that for sure! Good luck!
